Church

The small precious church located in Cavalicco di Tavagnacco, consecrated by Volpetto, Patriarch of Aquileia in the second year of his Patriarchate on 12 July 882 A.D. is the historical reminder of the municipality. With precious frescoes inside: the Madonna breast-feeding on the throne (1512) and San Sebastiano by Pietro Fuluto, an artist from Carnia. Frescoed on the sides of the ceiling are rounds erected by angels, with the four doctors of the Church (Agostino, Gregorio, Ambrogio, Gerolamo) inside dating back to the second half of the XV century.
A small portico and a bellgable characterise the small church of San Martino at Leonacco di Tricesimo. Immediately over the entrance is a protogothic holy water stoup that is difficult to date, carved with several faces, whereas the frescoes (15560) by Lorenzo Marano embellish the prysbytery. These frescoes came to the surface during restoration works after the earthquake. Another church in Tricesimo, but away from the bridle path is that of San Pelagio in Adorgnano with frescoes by Gian Paolo Thanner covering the entire prysbytery. At the side of villa Folli Tacelli Orgnani in Laipacco is the small church of San Giuseppe. It is important because it documents the life of fifteen plebeians in Friulian dress and the chamberlain Jacum de Michel, besides other sacred portrayals that, in this case, are the most representative of the cycle of frescoes (1524) by Gian Paolo Thanner.
At Treppo Grande, Girolamo, master-builder from Gemona, father of the famous architect Raimondo D’Aronco, built the parish church dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. Built in 1871 in late neo-classical style with two octagons, the church has a dome roof, whereas the forefront has a tympanum and pilasters. An elegant eighteenth-century altar with the statues of Saints Peter and Paul and a medieval fresco representing Saint Christopher can be found with other fragments in the church of Santa Maria Maddalena in Treppo Piccolo.
At Vendoglio in the church of San Michele, we can find some of the most important works and last frescoes of Gian Paolo Thanner: a Crucifixion (1555). In Buja the pentagonal bell tower of the parish church of San Lorenzo in Monte rises up against the façade of the church; it is a re-adaptation of the XVI century. This area has always been inhabited, in fact, archaeological findings, Roman coins, a Roman cistern, a late antique furnace for smelting small bronze items, are proof of the site’s importance.
